Individual Gift and Vacation Donation Programs Offer tax-deductible services to Newspaper in Education programs

(San Francisco, CA – September 22, 2000) Use The News Foundation is pleased to announce the Individual Gift and Vacation Donation Programs, 501(c)3 fiscal sponsor services. The new services make it possible for newspapers to expand nonprofit donation options to include multiple individual gifts of varying sizes, including vacation donations. The programs are being offered in response to inquiries from newspaper subscribers regarding the tax deductibility of these types of gifts.

The Individual Gift and Vacation Donation Programs offer new fiscal sponsor initiatives to newspapers wishing to expand their donor base of Newspaper in Education (NIE) supporters. The newspaper receives donations as the agent of Use The News (UTN) Foundation.

The Foundation’s programs provide nonprofit tax-deductible options to newspaper subscribers wishing to make vacation donation gifts to their newspaper. The Vacation Donation Program encourages readers to donate the use of their subscription to their newspaper’s NIE program while they are away on vacation.

The Individual Gift Program benefits those wishing to make a personal contribution in support of their newspaper’s NIE program. The new fiscal sponsor service makes it possible to expand nonprofit donation options to include multiple individual gifts of varying of sizes.

“Use The News Foundation is a longtime advocate for the use of newspapers in the teaching and learning process,” says Dr. Betty L. Sullivan, President of UTN Foundation. “UTN Foundation was prompted to explore the development of these two new levels of service as a result of questions from forward-thinking NIE and circulation managers.”

To encourage donations, UTN Foundation is waiving its usual 10% contribution fee for the two new services. Fees are dependent upon the tailoring of the programs for each newspaper and the specific Foundation services that will be used. The Foundation processes the donations, maintains verification data and sends appreciation acknowledgment letters to donors.

Use The News Foundation was established in August 1998 as a nonprofit benefit corporation that fosters partnerships with schools, NIE programs and their business sponsors. The Foundation’s services have been used in seven countries and by more than 700 newspapers and their NIE programs in the United States, reaching more than 67,000 classrooms.

UTN Foundation provides fiscal sponsorship that aids NIE programs in the receipt of tax-deductible donations for their educational work. Foundation staff provides technical assistance on strategies, grant proposal development, identification of partners and project verification for NIE programs. The Foundation provides training and consulting services on a variety of fundraising themes. It has also assisted a number of newspapers in obtaining grants for special projects.
